Listen to Obituary

Penny Suzanne Montgomery (Black) Haney went home to her Heavenly Father August 13, 2025, in her home in Cotter, Arkansas. Penny is survived by her husband, Daniel Mark Haney, her daughter Cynthia Danielle Black, and step-daughter Valerie Lynn Haney, her sister Arma Jo Montgomery Zimmerman (Randy), her brother Tad Montgomery, four step-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Her parents, Elizabeth Mardell Parsons Betts and Morris Earl Montgomery, predeceased her.

Penny was born in Hailey, Idaho, on September 28, 1953, in the Fox Building on Main Street. Her parents, Morris and Mardell, celebrated the birth of her second daughter before the snow hit the Wood River Valley.

During her childhood, there were many moves from Idaho to Utah to Arizona and then to Nevada. There she met her husband, Darryl Black, while she was still in high school. While living in Las Vegas, Penny trained to be a hairstylist—her lifelong trade. They married shortly after she graduated from both schools in Las Vegas.

During Darryl’s service while stationed in Oklahoma, they had their only child, Cynthia Danielle Black. Upon Darryl’s transfer to Hill Air Force Base and later discharge, they remained in Phoenix, Arizona, and Darryl graduated from Arizona State University. During her husband’s tenure with Conoco Oil, they lived in Dubai, where Penny enjoyed her pastimes of running, learning tennis, and shopping in the souks of Arabia.

When they returned to the United States, they divorced, and Penny remained in Texas for many years. She was very successful in her career and owned her own shop. Her devoted clientele stayed with her as long as she remained in the business, and as a result, she has many lifelong friends.

Something that Penny always had was pets. She had dogs, cats, chickens, goats, and parakeets, to name a few. Her love of animals has been a hallmark of her life.

Penny met her lifetime companion, Daniel Mark Haney, through a dating app, where they both checked the box about loving fishing. In their first meeting, they planned for their future together, and Mark knew she was his forever partner. They were married on July 26, 2007, in Las Vegas. Mark’s workplace and home were in Sweeney, Texas, so Penny commuted to her business in Houston for some time until retirement loomed.

In the meantime, Cyndi grew up and lived near and far. Penny loves and supports Cyndi, and she misses her deeply. She constantly hopes and prays that her daughter knows how much she loves her.

Retirement sent Mark and Penny to their dream home in Cotter, Arkansas—a beautiful home overlooking the White River. They have spent many happy years fishing... and fishing… together from the Gulf of Mexico to the Buffalo River and many other beautiful locations in the United States; they have made many fishing buddies.

Penny’s sense of style not only kept her lovely in her personal appearance, but she also brought that style into her homes, where comfort and beauty were always on display. When she traveled to visit family and friends, her suitcases were always large and plentiful with her matched outfits, including accessories (shoes and jewelry... and shoes).

She and Mark found a wonderful church to attend in Arkansas and have made many friends. These brothers and sisters in the gospel have been very supportive during Penny’s brave fight. Mark and Penny have shared much love and friendship with these wonderful people and wish to express their gratitude for all the wonderful times together.

A Celebration of Life for Penny will be 3:00 pm, Sunday, August 24, 2025, at Twin Lakes Baptist Church, with Dr. Sam Bailey officiating. Arrangements are by Kirby and Family Funeral and Cremation Services - Mountain Home, Arkansas. Visit an online obituary and guestbook at www.kirbyandfamily.com.
