Mary Jane Hillhouse

February 12, 1954 — December 13, 2023

It is with great sorrow and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Hillhouse. Mary Jane, known affectionately as Janie, departed from this earthly life on December 13, 2023, at the age of 69, peacefully at home. Her memory will forever remain in our hearts as a testament to a life well-lived.

Born on February 12, 1954, in Springfield, Missouri, Janie possessed a gentle spirit and a kind heart that touched the lives of all who knew her. Throughout her journey, she exemplified virtues of love, compassion, strength, and generosity that left an indelible mark in our hearts.

Janie dedicated her professional life to the noble field of nursing. As a perioperative surgical nurse and community home health nurse, she provided unwavering care and comfort to those in need. Her dedication to the wellbeing of others was an inspiration to her colleagues and a source of solace to countless patients during their most vulnerable moments. Janie's legacy of compassion and selflessness will forever resonate in the annals of our local healthcare community.

Beyond her vocation, Janie found solace in the simple joys of life. She had a deep passion for crochet and gardening, using these pursuits as creative outlets to express her gentle spirit. Her delicate crochet creations served as symbols of her artistic talent and attention to detail. In her garden, she nurtured life with tenderness, creating a serene and harmonious sanctuary that brought joy to all who beheld its beauty. Janie's love for nature and artistic endeavors showcased her ability to find peace amidst the complexities of life.

Janie's greatest pride and joy were her family. A devoted mother and grandmother, she cherished every moment spent with her daughter Chrystal Long-Carroll, son-in-law Chris Carroll, and grandsons Brandon Long and Thomas Rowe. She held dear her sister, Amy Hale, brother, Thomas Ashmead and his wife, Barbara, and the wide circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews who were fortunate to know her. Janie's unwavering love and support will forever be remembered as a guiding light in the lives of her family.

Janie was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Hazel and Fred Ashmead, her dear sister, Sue McBride, and her baby brother, Dwayne Ashmead. Together with them, she now rests in the eternal peace of the heavens, reunited with her soul mate, Donell Friend.

To honor and remember Janie's remarkable life, a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Kirby Funeral Home Chapel. This gathering of family, friends, and community members will provide an opportunity to celebrate Janie's legacy, share cherished memories, and provide comfort and support to one another during this time of loss.

In the wake of Janie's passing, our hearts are heavy, but we find solace in knowing that her love and kindness touched the lives of so many. Her grace, compassion, and unwavering spirit will forever resonate in our memories. May Janie's soul find eternal rest, and may her extraordinary legacy continue to inspire us all to cherish the simple joys of life and to extend a helping hand to those in need.
