Esther Marie (Fandrey) Schoonveld went to her home in heaven on July 14, 2026, exactly two weeks before her 99th birthday. She died at Lake Forest Senior Living (formerly Good Samaritan) in Mountain Home, AR where she lived for nine years in close proximity to her daughter, Carol Ann. Esther was born on July 28, 1927 in Summit, IL. She was the youngest of five children born to Emmie and William H. Fandrey. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children: Carol Ann Fuson (Mike), Ruth Ann Sofarelli, John Robert Schoonveld (Patty), and William Richard Schoonveld; six grandchildren: William, Joseph, Michael, Anthony, Nicole and Kelly; and many great-grandchildren.

Esther’s life was one of “giving.” She was devoted to her children, always sacrificing her own benefit for that of her family. She married John L. Schoonveld (her high-school sweetheart) on August 8, 1947. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Summit, IL where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. After her children were grown, Esther worked as a cook and kitchen manager in Nursing Home Establishments. When she retired, she volunteered at Zion School’s hot lunch program. She served as President of Zion’s Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) for many years.

Esther loved to tell jokes and was known for her many “stories.” She was an excellent seamstress, sewing clothes for her family and couch covers and curtains for anyone who needed them. She made a quilt which won first place in a contest at Good Samaritan! Esther’s mind was amazingly sharp, even in old age. She was a multi-talented lady and a gifted problem-solver.
