Maxine Garrett

Maxine Garrett of Mountain Home, Arkansas, passed away January 31, 2022, in Yellville, Arkansas at the age of 94. Maxine Garrett was born July 14, 1927 to Bennie and Verda Witter Johnson in Opolis, Kansas . Maxine Johnson married Donald Garrett on June 5, 1942, in Webb City, Missouri. Maxine worked as a seamstress at Nelly Don’s Garment making high end garments in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s. Don and Maxine bought George's One Stop in 1959, which was a service station and a bait & tackle shop in Bull Shoals. They moved to Bull Shoals in February, 1960, to take over their new business. and started George's Fishing Service, which offered float trips on local rivers for trout and small mouth bass fishing. Maxine and husband Don were self-employed owning a service station, and a bait & tackle shop and later built a small grocery store. They built the first car wash and the first Laundromat in Bull Shoals. Maxine and Don also started the Crystal Clear Ice Company for block and cubed ice which was later sold and is now located in Mountain Home. Don and Maxine and their son Danny were partners in Garrett General Hauling. Maxine and Don retired in 1975 and moved to Flippin, AR. In 1988 they moved to Mountain Home to be close to doctors and the hospital. After Don’s death Maxine moved back to Flippin to be close to her daughter, Tammy Hodges and son, Danny. Maxine moved to Yellville and entered nursing home in 2021. Maxine became a member of Cotter Eastern Star in 1965 and received her 50 year pin in 2017. She was a member of the Bull Shoals United Methodist Church. Maxine has spent her retirement years in Flippin, Mountain Home, Yellville, Florida, Brownsville, TX and South Padre, TX. She loved fishing on Bull Shoals Lake and the ocean surf in South Padre, Texas.

She is survived by sister, Carol Simpkins of Greeneville, TX; daughter; Tammy (Mike) Hodges of Flippin; three granddaughters: Karen (Chris) Carter, Sandy (Tony) Davenport both of Yellville and Tory Hodges of Flippin; one grandson, Michael Don (Margaret) Hodges of Flippin; ten great grandchildren; Ray Wayne and Lindsey Davenport, Scott, Eric and Cameron Carter, Macie Kate Rorie and Peyton Bodenhamer, Preston, Alexandria, and Aidan Hodges and two great-great grandchildren, Kyle Carter and Sophia Layton.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, infant daughter, Debra Sue, and son Danny Garrett.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10AM, Monday, February 7, 2022, at the Bull Shoals United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles “Pete” Beevers officiating.

Private Burial will be in Flippin Cemetery.
