Darrel Theodore Knouse

October 22, 1926 — November 17, 2020

Darrel Theodore Knouse age 94, of Mountain Home, passed away November 17, 2020, at his residence in Mountain Home. He was born October 22, 1926, in Bemidji, Minnesota, to Lyle and Dorothy Knouse. He married Donna Farnham on July 28, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa. Darrel enlisted in the Navy in May of 1944 and was discharged in May of 1946. He was a radio operator RM3/c, and served in the Pacific aboard the CA28 Louisville. He worked for Western Union as a teleprinter operator and manager in the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin. He transferred to W.U. Plant & Engineering in Des Moines, Iowa in 1951. In 1952, he was employed by IBM Electric Typewriter as a director in Des Moines. This was a challenging adventure, but he longed to get back to the upper Midwest. In 1957 Darrel was manager and training manager for Holiday Station Stores in Minnesota. In 1964 he entered GSA Federal Civil Service as a maintenance mechanic, at the federal building in Bismarck, North Dakota. In 1966 he was a buildings superintendent of five U.S. Border Stations with the office in Portal, North Dakota and Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 1973, he transferred to the Civil Engineering Squadron, Air Force Academy. His retirement position was with the EMCS computer control center. He retired in 1986.

He enjoyed Ham Radio. He had his License #KF7PP and FCC 20 wpm certificate. Landscaping his homes was one of his hobbies, along with garage sales.

His life involved many adventurous, exciting and challenging moves to many different localities before and during his retirement. He spent 25 years in the business world and 25 years in Federal Government.

They moved to Mountain Home in 2004, from Sun City West, Arizona.

Darrel is survived by his sister, Shirley Schmickle of Anoka, MN; two sons, Steven (Jane) Knouse of Lincoln, NE and son, Andrew (Marie) Knouse of Atlantic Highlands, NJ; several grandchildren; nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law, Larry Farnham of Fridley, MN and Clifton Farnham of Chippewa Falls, WI and sister-in-law, Karen Cuellar of Fruita, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

A Celebration of Life for Darrel will be 11:00 am, Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Mountain Home Bible Church, with Pastor Mike Bennett officiating. Inurnment will be in the Kirby's Tucker Memorial Mausoleum, Mountain Home, Arkansas. Military Honors will be provided by the Alley-White American Legion Post #52 and United States Navy Honor Guards. Due to current restrictions, masks are required.

Memorials may be made to the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas, 1042 East Highland Circle, Mountain Home, AR 72653.
