Herbert Richard Smith

July 29, 1926 — July 11, 2017

Herbert Richard Smith, 90, passed away July 11, 2017, at Pioneer Nursing Home in Melbourne, Arkansas. Herb was born July 28, 1926, in DeRidder, Louisiana. He was one of four children born to Alfred and Ellen Smith. He grew up in Louisiana and East Texas, joining the United States Navy as a teenager. Upon discharge from the service, he moved to California with his wife, Jeane Whitesell. There, they raised two children. He worked as a mechanic at E.I. DuPont in South San Francisco for many years. During this time, he built his own home in San Carlos and enjoyed raising and riding horses. In 1968, he married Lillian Graham. They blended their families and continued to work in the San Mateo area until retiring to Brockwell, Arkansas in 1977. Here they built their new home and continued what would be 44 years together. They had many interests including family, church, neighbors, birds, cattle and the local wildlife. They traveled as they pleased and enjoyed trips to Hawaii, the Bahamas and Maine. Herb especially enjoyed the outdoors. He liked hunting, raising horses and cattle, and working on the farm. He enjoyed "yard selling" and picked up many treasures in his travels.

Herb was predeceased by his wife, Lillian, his parents, two brothers, one sister, one son and one granddaughter.

Herb is survived by two daughters, Caroll (Lloyd) Dickinson and Cindy (Jimmy) Jones; one son, Rick (Julie) Graham; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Burial arrangements at the Fairview Baptist Cemetery, Violet Hill, Arkansas, will be private.

Arrangements are by Kirby and Family Funeral and Cremation Services.
